The gr8ful grind: February 2010

Let go of anger; It's an acid that eats away the delicate layers of your happiness

The reverse side has also its reverse side

In another nod toward the current Winter Olympics, not all the activities happen in Vancouver itself. Some are up the coastline where the mountains are much higher, like these. The mountains in the foreground are islands, while the ones in the background are on the BC mainland. (click on the thumbnail for a closer look) Cortes Island, BC, Canada; July, 2006.

An ancient tribe of Native peoples who were cliff dwellers called the Sinagua created this 20-room high rise apartment on the side of a cliff. Interestingly enough, Sinagua means waterless, yet this place, called Montezuma's Castle, has Beaver Creek flowing right in front of it, along with areas of crop development. We finish our week studying Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris with this night shot. There's really nothing more Gothic than standing next to this building at night when it's fully lit. (click on the thumbnail for more detail). Paris, France; September, 2009.

Thursday, February 18, 2010

Since we didn't post a photo yesterday, we're posting 2 of them today. The flying buttresses of Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris are impressive enough by day, but to see them lit at night is even more so. Taken from across the Seine, Paris, France; September, 2009.
When one looks at Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris at night, it's really not hard to see how Hugo wrote his book about the hunchback. Here, the gargoyles (rain spouts) stand out in the bright night lights. One can almost hear Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor just looking at this photo. Paris France; September, 2009.

Monday, February 15, 2010

This week, we're concentrating on Paris. Where does one start in Paris? Well, we've decided to spend the entire week looking at an incredible architectural marvel: the Cathedral Norte Dame de Paris. This photo was taken from the Petit Pont over the Seine River. Paris, France; September, 2009.

It was early in the morning; everything was so still. The sun had just risen above the rooftops, still in an orange color state, throwing long shadows. No sound, not even birds or traffic. I could have been in ancient Greece, on my way to the Acropolis or something. I felt like that was where I was. It was sorta spooky. It was timeless. (Click on thumbnail for more detail) Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco, California; January, 2008.

So there I was driving to work last week and I was looking off to the side, noticing the fog. And then I saw this one house on a knoll popping out in the middle of the fog way off in the distance. I pulled over, grabbed the point and shoot, and took this shot. I had to use the extreme telephoto, so it's not the best quality, but it was a cool scene in my opinion. (Click on the thumbnail to see the house better, along with phantom trees in the fog) Jefferson County, Oregon; February, 2010.

Monday, February 01, 2010

We're spending this week in London. We'll start along the River Thames at the famous Eye, which has a multitude of small little capsules, each of which hold at least a dozen or more people. I think it takes about a half hour to complete the circle, and I'm told you can get some great pics from the top. I didn't go on it. London, UK; September, 2009.
