The gr8ful grind: January 2011

Let go of anger; It's an acid that eats away the delicate layers of your happiness

Inside the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres. It is considered one of the finest examples of the French High Gothic style. The current cathedral was mostly constructed between 1193 and 1250. Since at least the 12th century the cathedral has been an important destination for travellers - and remains so to this day, attracting large numbers of Christian pilgrims, many of whom come to venerate its famous relic, the Sancta Camisa, said to be the tunic worn by the Virgin Mary at Christ's birth, as well as large numbers of secular tourists who come to see this Unesco World Heritage Site. My house was built the same year I as born. We're the same age. I've lived here for 28 years, but I've sold it and will be moving out next month. A little bittersweet, as I'll miss some of the memories and familiarities of the old place, while looking forward to a much more modern house with modern amenities. Anyway, this is the artwork over the kitchen sink of this old place. I look at it each time I wash the dishes--soon I'll have a dishwasher. There's no parking at the doctor's house garage. Unfortunately, this great old and colorfully weathered door has been replaced with a modern off-white sliding garage door you'd see in any suburb; not all that impressive considering where it's located. We'd spent the afternoon floating the Yonne River and had docked for the night. The sun was beginning to set and the humidity was rising in preparation for rainfall. But right above us the sky opened up for a patch of blue, which was reflected in the river as I snapped this one. Burgundy region of France; September, 2009.

So at least once per month--sometimes 2 or 3 times--I hafta drive over 150 miles down US Highway 97 for work purposes. This time of year, over half of those miles on that road looks like this photo I took on my trip down there last week. Luckily, as this photo also shows, there are only about 4 turns for the entire stretch of highway. It's a pretty straight road. Icy, but straight. Snowy, but straight. Slippery, but straight. And oh how fun it is trying to pass semis on this stuff! Rural Klamath County, Oregon; January, 2011.
