The gr8ful grind: September 2015

Let go of anger; It's an acid that eats away the delicate layers of your happiness

There's more than one arc in the city. This is the Arc du Carousel near the Louvre. Paris, France; September, 2015.

Yesterday we posted a pic taken in front of Sacre Coeur. If one turns directly around, this is the Basilica itself. Paris, France, September, 2015.

As we continue our second week of the just returned trip, we offer up a look of the city from Butte Montmartre, taken directly in front of Basilica Sacre Coeur. (Click the photo for a larger view) Paris, France; September, 2015

Place des Voges was bult by King Henry IV 1605 and was the prototype of all other European squares. Interestingly, his house was on one side of the square, while his queen's house on the opposite side of the square. French author Victor Hugo also lived here. Today, it's a VERY toney place with about only the very well to do living around the square. If you're on a budget, plan to eat somewhere else. We ordered a cheeseburger and was brought just about the most boring burger we've ever eaten: meat cheese, a little sauce, and a side of fries. That's it. No lettuce, tomatoes, onions, nothing but the 20 euro bill (about $23). I emphasize a boring flavor. Paris, France; September, 2015.

Construction began on Notre Dame in the early 1100s and it took almost 174 years to complete. When one is up close, one can see why. Paris, France; September, 2015.

There's just something about a sunset along the Seine that can't be beat. Paris, France; September, 2015.

Some folks think the Louvre is one of the most gorgeous palaces around, while others think Versailles tops them all. But we have a special place in our hearts for the Opera Garnier, the Paris Opera House. This pic was taken at the bottom of one of it's fantastic staircases. Paris, France; September, 2015,

We've just returned from another weeklong stay in Paris, so for the next week (two?) or so we'll be posting a few photos of the visit. This one was taken while floating down the Seine on a bataux boat on a brilliant afternoon, with Ile de Cité where the city was founded over 2,100 years ago on the left. The cupola of the Énglise Catholique Collégiale St Quiriace can be seen as one looks up the street of this medieval, walled city. Province, France; September, 2013.

We aren't quite sure what this particular wagon was used for, but obviously it did some heavy labor. Fort Rock, Oregon; June, 2015.

This was our room at the historic old Balch Hotel. If you're ever in the neighborhood, we highly recommend it as a place to listen to the quiet and release all that tension in your shoulders, allowing them to lower to the place where they should actually be. (Clickk the photo for a better view out of the window) Dufur, Oregon; August, 2015.

It's amazing what one can find off the beaten path. So there we were, out in the middle of nowhere along state Highway 6 as a cut off to get to another Interstate and we drove by this. If you click on the photo you can see the heart much more clearly. Someone put a lot of time and effort into this, what with painting the rock and getting the two halves as even as possible. It might be difficult to tell here, but from the to of the heart to the bottom point is about 10 feet in length. Somewhere on Highway 6 near (we think) Woodside, Utah; August, 2014.

River City is getting a new bridge, Tillicum Crossing, set to open in a week or two. This bridge will not have any auto traffic, just light rail, bikes, and pedestrians. This photo was taken almost a year ago, about a couple of months after the center span was completed. (Click the photo for mote detail) Portland, Oregon; August, 2014.

It can be difficult to cross US Highway 101 along the west coast of the US, as it's usually jamming with cars no matter the time of year. However, there are some clever ways to get around that, such as this passage under the 101 bridge, allowing tourists to get from one side to the other. Depot Bay, Oregon; February, 2015.

Monday, September 07, 2015

For much of August the western US has been burning up--a multitude of wildfires, and multiple homes destroyed. Usually this view is quite pristine and one can see for many miles, with the Cascade Range off in the distance. On this day, smoke from the wildfires was filtering its way down the Columbia River Gorge. Near Vista House at Crown Point, Oregon; August, 2015.
