To get from one side of the Canal du Nivernais, one must cross bridges such as this, whether on foot, on a bike, or in a car. However, if one is floating a boat down the canal, then one of the people in the boat has to be let off on the side of the bank, crank up the bridge by hand allowing the boat through, crank down the bridge again before jumping back onto the boat. Burgundy region of France; September, 2009.
